Jack of all trades master of none
There's an old guitar kept on the shelf with a broken chord I once aspired to master; there's a novel unfinished on the study, waiting to be picked from where I left. And then, catches my gaze, the multiple tabs opened in my tablet…
a mocking voice gags at me, saying,
“Huh, Jack of all trades, master of none!”
What is wrong with me? I can't finish anything I pick. They say, “Pick one thing and stay in the lane,” but I can't, can I?
I get intrigued by everything and want to learn everything all at once. Not just that...I want to be perfect at it since the day I begun.
How foolish I think of me to believe I can be jack of all trades and be the master too?
I think and think, trapped in the loop of my own judgment, wondering: Is this exhaustion my ultimate truth?
But curiosity is a persistent thing; It kicks in again, pulling me out of the dark, demanding to know: Who is the master of all?
And there, buried beneath the world's criticism, I find the better half of the quote they hid from us:
“A jack of all trades, master of none, is still oftentimes better than a master of one.”
Better than a master of one.
I let that echo, and suddenly the weight shifts. I look at the dusty guitar, the open tabs, the scattered ideas, and I don't see failures anymore.
I see my world, all the small trades that make me who I am.
So, I will go pick up that guitar today. I’ll play it for some time, let my fingers remember the chords.
If tomorrow I choose to read just a few pages of that book? that’s okay, I will finish those pages and let that be my victory.
I am a jack of all trades. I will just finish the trade I pick today!
I am allowed to be complex. I am allowed to expand.
I will live all my trades day by day, taking them one afternoon at a time.
And who knows? By the end of it all, maybe
I will master it all.
